Aprés Ski | January 2025

The Alps have helped to popularise skiing as a recreation and sport, and many resorts in these famous mountains which span the borders of France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Austria, are nearing 100 years of age. Yet many also face an existential crisis.

Climate change.

Year on year, more and more resorts face unpredictable snowfall, changes in weather patterns, and rising temperatures, which is pushing snow further up mountainsides. Scientists now believe snowfall below 1800 metres of altitude will be rare by the middle of the 21st century. For now, the lower resorts are battling to stay operational by using snow cannon and other snow production methods, but ultimately many are looking to a future without snow, and questioning how to remain viable as mountain-top holiday destinations.
